This event is only for Young Professionals in their 20's and 30's.
Coffee & Community is a Young Professionals event, which connects Young Professionals to community leaders and provides informational sessions about issues that impact their region.
Our Jefferson Chamber Young Professionals will hear from the Council at Large members Jennifer Van Vrancken, Division A, and Scott Walker, Division B. We will learn what inspired the Council members to chose public office, what are their challenges, and what is the most rewarding part of their jobs. Furthermore. we will learn how we can be more engaged in our community and how as young professionals, we can make a difference.
Meet the speakers:
Honorable Jennifer Van Vrancken
Council-at-Large, Division A
Jennifer Van Vrancken is an attorney and former television journalist. She works hard to bring innovation, efficiency and common sense to government.
Honorable Scott A. Walker
Council Chairman
Councilman-at-Large, Division B
Councilman At-Large Scott Walker was resoundingly re-elected to his second term on the Jefferson Parish Council in 2023 after garnering 61% of the parish wide vote. Scott brings a commonsense approach to the Council and tackles each decision with the best interests of the people of Jefferson Parish in mind.
Placing a priority on the parish’s youngest learners, Walker has led the Jefferson Parish Council's early childhood education initiative with contributions totaling nearly two million dollars over the past four years. He also provided funding to fully renovate a Jefferson Parish Head Start center in River Ridge.
Walker has worked closely with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office to enhance public safety, recently providing funding for two speed trailers equipped with license plate reader technology and bulletproof vests for JPSO K9s. Walker led the parish wide redistricting efforts after the 2020 Census, provided funding for the purchase of an ambulance to serve Lafitte, Jean Lafitte, Crown Point and Barataria, strongly supports ongoing efforts to modernize the parish library system and was the driving force behind $20 million in funding being dedicated to the modernization of The Shrine on Airline and The Alario Center. Walker’s office also facilitated and paid for upgrades at the Alario Center, such as new sport court and basketball goals for the facility. In addition, Councilman Walker is proud to have helped fund wireless internet at parish playgrounds, secure additional early voting locations, launch the parish’s first Spanish-language Facebook page and organize and execute United Way relief efforts on the ground after a tornado severely damaged parts of the Westbank.
Councilman Walker has regular meetings with JEDCO representatives to discuss economic development ideas and initiatives across the parish, as well as specific development opportunities on the Westbank.
As Councilman At-Large, Walker represents the entire parish, and has focused on transparency, honesty, accessibility and responsiveness. Anyone who calls or emails his office will hear back from someone that day.
Councilman Walker is the oldest of three children and was born and raised in Metairie. He attended St. Angela Merici, Brother Martin High School and the University of Southern Mississippi. He spent 23 years in local news before leaving the business in 2018 to open his PR firm, Scott Walker Media, and Shipley Do-Nuts on Metairie Road. He lives in Metairie with his wife and two children.
